Toby Lee A03 Week 9
After reading this week’s article, “Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans”, written by Soya Jung, we can see that Asians are often separated from the discussion of racial injustice. There was a quote that stood out to me, “Given that the U.S. economy and political system are rooted in anti-blackness, claiming our place in America means that we must take a position when faced with the separate but unequal worlds of whiteness and blackness. We are either left or right of the color line.” The reason I found this quote to be quite meaningful is because it shows that as Asians we can’t show a neutral opinion on topics like this. In this society we must have a strong opinion on things and must take a position. Soya Jung connected the topic of how blacks have faced injustice and how it relates to the Asian American population. As Asian Americans we can see how the Blacks have dealt with this racial injustice and in the same way fight for our rights. She also mentioned how we have created the model minority myth. This article shows how both the Blacks and Asians are fighting for the same justice. A question I have after reading this article is why Asians are often not included in the topic of struggling to achieve racial justice?
