Week 9
Soya Jung's article, "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans" illustrated an interesting conversation regarding where Asian Americans fall, in the spectrum of racist and prejudiced treatment of minorities in the US. From the article, Brittney Cooper said, "Nothing makes white people more uncomfortable than black anger. But nothing is more threatening to black people on a systemic level than white anger." To me this highlights the idea that the white population is held up on their own high pedestal, and they fear anything or anyone that challenges their position. On the other hand, because they are in the position of power, it seems that whatever they do is justified. And in a sense can get away with the treatment of other minorities.
It should come as no surprise today that when African Americans are discriminated against, on any level there is support from the rest of the minority group. However an important point that Jung mentioned is the "The invisibility of Asian death and the denial of any form of Asian American identity." I feel that discrimination towards Asian American populations is just as relevant as discrimination to other minorities, as can be seen from the BART incident this past week when a white male verbally and physically attacked an Asian man with punches and racial slurs. I think this is partly because how minorities do not stand up for each other as a unified battle. Instead we are all left fighting our own battles against a power that won't change.
Question:
Do you see the minorities coming together for a unified movement, or do you think that we will continue to fight racism as separate issues for separate ethnic groups.
