Week 9
Upon reading "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans" by Soya Jung this week, I was interested to hear why the Asian American community specifically was concerned in terms of interest with the case of Ferguson. Upon reading the title of the article I initially thought it was related to the court case of Plessy v Ferguson, which instilled the precedent for "separate but equal" schools when it came to the case of segregation. This brought me to believe that the article would be focused on Asian American's concerns with black issues. It was ironic when I completed reading the article and came to discover that was correct however concerning the death of Mike Brown. One statement in the article that particularly hit me was that Mike Brown's body was metaphorically buried at the same low level as Dred Scott, whom was a slave that was denied his freedom in a widely acclaimed unlawful act of Court. Both men, although from different times and unfortunate circumstances, still deal with the circumstances of racial injustice. This stands out to me because I would expect and hope for society to at least make some acknowledgements and/or adjustments of racial wrongdoing, especially to the African American culture as it pertains here. The same applies to the Asian American culture, as this article states the two cultures do struggle with the same issues with some variation. For example, the topic of Asian American and African American unlawful deaths. While Asian American's deaths are invisible to the media and others, African American unlawful deaths are popularized in the media.
Question: If controversial Asian American deaths were to be broadcast more on television (similar to African American death) how would this affect the perception of controversial African American deaths?
Follow up question: Or, would there be no effect at all?
