In the article Building a Culture of Solidarity: Racial
Discourse, Black Lives Matter, and Indigenous Social Justice, Professor
Santos F. Ramos points out that the hierarchy of oppression tries to assimilate
Indigenous people into the dominant culture, but do not truly let them gain
autonomy or sovereignty. This indigenous social justice issue is often
neglected and people of color are continually oppressed by the hierarchy. Thus,
the article shows the importance of building the culture of solidarity and
understand the rationality between different communities. In my culture, only a
few people dare to fight the hierarchy publicly, so I can understand how Asian
people support BLM but not initiate its own protest against the white
supremacy. The article also provided me the insight that supporting BLM with
improper hashtag might make the Black people to be more targeted group because
BLM movement tends to be the most intensive and lasting movement that fight
against the white supremacy. In overall, I think this article is informative;
it lets me understand the importance of building the culture of solidarity, the
complexity of solidarity, and the deceptiveness of some current indigenous
social justice.
Question:
How can we practice building the culture of solidarity in
the cultural clubs on campus?
