Week 9- Thuong Nguyen, A01

This week I read "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans." The name Ferguson sounded familiar to me, but it wasn't until I read the article until I realized what this was about. I feel as if the Black Lives Matters movement has been going on for a long time now, and I thoroughly support it. It is naive to think that racial issues is gone from our society. Although this movement pertains mainly to African American citizens, it is the first step digressing away from a deep-rooted white supremacist society. Yet I wonder how long it will take before Asian Americans can get the same publicity. In today's mainstream media we have seen an improvement on African American representation. I see tv shows adding black female/male actors, advertisements featuring black models, ect. This is so their company are not deemed as "racist." Why is this not the same for Asian Americans? Every year I watch the Victoria Secret Fashion Show, the biggest fashion show in the nation. Yet out of the 44 female models that get to walk the stage, only 4 are Asian, all of which were Chinese. The year before that, only 2 Asians walked the stage. It just shows the lack of Asian representation in media. If Asians are still struggling just to find representation/publicity in the mainstream society, how long will it take until our voices are heard?

Questions: What steps can we begin to solve these racial issues? Will joining the Black Lives Matter movement have a positive impact on Asian Americans life too?
