Week 9
The article "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans" by Soya Jung begins by introducing cases of anti-black racism and the violence that has brought pain to several black mothers. Jung uses these examples as an introduction into her main idea which is that Ferguson does matter to Asian Americans because of the support of the black community. She describes the connection between the Asian American culture with Ferguson. As people not of white or black descent, it's hard for us to find our place especially when our country is based primarily on those two different groups. Jung explains how the word han is widely used in her culture and its meaning is basically frustration and rage. She says that she knows to control her rage and confront it in a way that isn't harmful to others which is the opposite of what police officers do towards people of color. In the end, she firmly states that Ferguson does matter to Asian Americans and that she agrees with Ferguson's dream about creating a world of peace. After reading this article, I feel the same way with Jung. The fact that police officers get to harm people of color and kill some for no reason is completely senseless. They shouldn't be able to get off the hook when they're preventing a child from going back home to their mothers for nothing that's worth killing someone over. In my opinion, I agree with Jung that we should stand behind Ferguson and that it actually does matter. Regardless of what group we are part of, I, personally, would like to see a world thats armed with love and rage instead of guns and ammo.
Question: With all the various cases of unnecessary shootings and harm done to people of color, why is it taking so long for people to realize how ludicrous this whole situation is? Why is white privilege more important than saving lives?
