Week 8 - Emily Luc

Week 8

The article "What Asian Americans are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice" By Mark Tseng Putterman sheds light on the many questions of the Asian American role in the racial justice movement. Asian Americans are seen as the "model minority," and therefore often excluded from conversations of racial justice. Putterman makes the argument that while Asian Americans have experienced a history of racial oppression and exploitation like other POC, we have also been given a platform of privilege—something that other minority groups did not get to experience. Therefore, Asian Americans have generally been separated from other minorities and excluded from the racial justice movement. The article explores the experiences of exclusion by Asian American college students. Many young Asian American students, such as myself, often feel unwelcome in the social movements mainly because there has been a lot of controversy whenever we want to show our support. We are perceived as uncaring/not holding the movement in high regard, because we have been placed on this platform of privilege.

As a young Asian American, I found this article to be very relatable because it discusses activism within my own community. Growing up, I constantly questioned whether or not Asian American voices were actually considered in conversations about racism. However, I never questioned whether or not I was a POC or if I belonged to a minority group. Personally, I believe that the majority of Asian Americans have used their privilege for the greater good and taken part in many activist movements against racial justice. In this article, Putterman pointedly elaborates on the role that Asian Americans have taken in the Black Lives Matter movement. The article strongly urges the public to rethink their opinions and calls for more institutional support for Asian American activists.

Question: Why has there been a large divide between Asian Americans and other POC? How can we establish more institutional support for Asian American activists?
