Week 8
In his article, "What Asian Americans are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice," Mark Tseng Putterman sheds light on the invisibility of Asian Americans in social disparities minorities face in America. We are seen as a "privileged" minority, meaning that we are, for lack of a better word, "better" than all the other minorities. In reality, however, the case is not so. Asian Americans just lack a voice in the discrimination we have been facing and continue to face.
During high school, I did not experience the extent of racism others in America do; however, I was treated as differently and friends noticed it as well. While I did have a diverse friend group, I only felt comfortable with other Asian American students due to this. I feel like this wall between me and others might be due to the fact that my school system did not include me and my culture in the curriculum, causing a misunderstanding between people with different cultural identities. I believe the major reason that we are viewed the way we are is because no one actually knows anything going on regarding racism against our people or generally anything about us at all, and this has blinded everyone into thinking that there are no disparities we face in American society. That is why advocacy is important, and as we continue to make our voice known, more people will be able to "see" the problems we have.
Are the problems we face compared to the problems other minorities face even a big deal, we are neither being hunted nor being kicked out of the country? Is the scale on the types of disparities there are in the world causing everyone to become insensitive to the disparities Asian Americans face?
