Week 8 Anthony Canavesio A02

The world we live in is definitely a black and white world. This weeks reading “What Asian’ Are Bringing to Campus movements for Racial Justice” written by Mark Tseng Putterman really touches on this. This text was very critical unto how on campus and in general there are a lot of movements regarding social justice’ yet they all revolve around black and whites. This article is very critical of this as it claims Asian American’ are less likely to become politically active for issues that don't retain to them. I find this very true in today's society as when you see an activist group trying to spread awareness they often only push for black or latino equality which is very interesting to note. In my own opinion this shows how other minorities such as blacks and latinos view Asian Americans as above them in the social caste. This classification by other minorities only adds to the narrative of Asians being the model minority as it is an example of how one they are less likely to get involved with issues not retaining to them and how other minorities don't view asians as having to go through the same struggle. I think it is very important to note how this article touches on how social issues are not geared towards Asian American equality. Social issues have conjured up this white vs black narrative in society thus leaving behind the Asian American. This leaves us to question the whole way our current social caste is viewed. Are Asians in our society viewed above other minorities, yet still below whites? So if social issues aren't geared towards Asian Americans why don't they just bring their own issues to light? Well in a simple sense a lot of Asian Americans are happy, they are content with what they have even if it is not equal, because it is better than what they had. So with this Asians are kept organized and thus the model minority persona is kept alive.

My question for this week is how are Asian American’ working past the idea of the model minority? Are there groups out there soley for Asian equality?
