In Mark Tseng Putterman’s article, “What Asian Americans Are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice”, he discusses the relationship between Asian Americans and their experiences with social injustice. He writes about how society views Asian Americans as the “model minority”, which results in the exclusion of their narrative when discussing social injustice in America. He discusses this idea that Asian Americans are placed into the middle ground between oppressor and oppressed. The oppression of Asian Americans in society seems to be overshadowed by the idea of the “model minority”. It seems as if Asian Americans are both too white and not white enough for society. Reading this article made me think about how there are not many social movements that fight the injustices towards Asian Americans. Our issues are not taken very seriously because we are seen as a part of the oppressor. I think it is important that we bring to light the injustices that Asian Americans face in society, without trying to overshadow any other movements. It is common for people to try to show their support for movements, but overshadow the main purpose with their own injustices. It is important that groups learn how to show support without undermining.
Question: How can people show their support for a movement that they have no personal experience with?
