Sushil Ravoori - Week 7 A02

I think that the article “The Coddling of the American Mind” brings up some very valid points and explores some of the potential downfalls of “politically correct” college campuses. While I do think it is very important to maintain a safe learning environment for all students, I think some of the measures taken in the present day are relatively extreme. Some of the examples in the text highlight this, like when a student was punished for reading a book about opposition to the Ku Klux Klan. In fact, us Davis students personally witnessed this when Milo Yiannopoulus, a historically incendiary speaker, was scheduled to speak at the campus, and was barred due to protests from the student body. I personally strongly disagree with his views, but I believe strongly in maintaining free speech and discourse at University Campuses, and in our country. In order for me to keep my right to not be silenced, I think it is proper that I do not silence others. With this mentality, I think all viewpoints should be tolerated on college campuses. I think that freedom of knowledge is the most important factor at a college campus, and it is important that students are exposed to a variety of viewpoints on different issues. If we censor certain topics or present biased views of them to students, then the students are not getting the education that they deserve from such an institution.
