Xin Nie, A04, Week 6 blog

After reading the“Open the box: an international Asian women scholar’s fight” written by Akiko Takeyama. I know that Akiko Takeyama, a Japanese professor, has encountered numerous discriminations in her teaching and academic career. Also, racial and sexual prejudices and systemic problems of schools have brought tremendous troubles to international scholars. Such problems are just like Asian-Americans who have long been bothered by "stereotypes" that leave a black-haired, yellow-skinned, hardworking, and family-superior impression to the public. In addition, according to her experience, students tend to have more academic misconduct because of their professors being female Asian-Americans. Female professors always have to care about their students more academically. It is difficult for an international scholar to compile a book in her second language. Besides, she did not quit or give up when facing failed tenure. In contrast, she fought back with all the fears and burdens together with her family, friends, and colleagues. It reminds me of the Affirmative Action in the education field that there are quite a number of Asian parents who believe that Asian students generally have excellent academic scores. However, in order to retain a certain quota for students of other races, top American universities limit the number of Asian students admitted on purpose, which increases the difficulty for Asian students being admitted to universities significantly. These are all cases of Asian-Americans being discriminated against. Even in modern American society, many people consider Asian-Americans as "permanent outsiders" rather than "Americans". Although many Asians have already integrated into the local society, they are still often asked how long have they been living in the United States, "Where are you from", etc. In fact, many Asian-Americans are born and grow up in the United States and are not first-generation immigrants.
My question is why do universities indulge this behavior?
