Mattia Sayson ASA 002 A02 Week 9

In "Pain + Love = Growth: The Labor of Pinayist Pedagogical Praxis," Nievera-Lozano details the perspectives of 6 different Pinay scholar activists and the struggles they faced in academia. This reading resonated with me from the start with the discussion of how these Filipinx American woman dealt with being first generation daughters as children of immigrants as well as similarities in family in healthcare. The internal dilemmas they faced or some of the ongoing thoughts I have now as a first year undergraduate college student. Especially with my newfound appreciation for spaces like Asian American Studies classes, I know I want to delve into the world of academia at one point. Their positions in these spaces have proven their resilience in surviving pressures of the ivory tower in academia. Right now, I was lucky enough to be enrolled in two Asian American studies courses and it has definitely been a breather from the rest of my classes. Not a day goes by where I am not learning more of the different systems of oppression that exist in which people of underrepresented communities face daily. To read about one of my professors. Robyn Rodriguez, in this chapter was especially interesting because I see her every Tuesday and Thursday. How she has navigated her way through academia is inspiring as well as seeing where she is now is a gamechanger. She is currently head of the ASA department and the director of the Bulosan Center for Filipinx Studies, a space for scholar-activists in the making in the campus of UC Davis. One question I definitely have is why did she and many others in this book face backlash and lacked support from fellow members of the Asian American community? What prevented them from joining together in solidarity?
