Tian Tian, A03, Week 10 Blog

In this quarter, we have gone through the book “Fight the Tower.” This week, we finish reading the conclusion part. I feel a lot about this chapter and this book. First, I am impressed by the part of waking up and fight for our people. I, as a member of Asian American in academia, has to internalize the social engineering and social construction those years. However, by reading this book, I know more and more about the stories of Asian Americans. I find our people and be woken up by our people. Injustice and mobbing in academia are not unique. As individuals, we need to stand together and speak up, and this is the way of fighting and living for our people. Academia needs to change, and silence could not help in this process.

The last part of the conclusion deeply moves me. We know changes in academia will not happen overnight. Every change needs time. What we do is light the fire. We want more people could join and recognize injustice and irrationality existed in academia. We want academia could listen to our arguments and address our suggestions for change. We like to help and gather our people. We believe a single spark can start a prairie fire.

Question: As students, I wonder what we could do to change academia? Could we do some research, publishing papers, or joining protests?
