In this week’s reading “Opening the Box: An international Asian Woman Scholar Fight,” the author, Akiko Takeyama talks about her own experience applying for tenure detailly. Even though, she put more efforts into working and teaching, she states that there are many difficulties for an international professor, not only caused by the faculty but also caused by the students. Specifically, it is difficult for them to be hired and promoted. In classes, the students deceive her in different ways. She states a phenomenon that cheating behavior happened in female professors’ classes frequently, since students always consider women as emotional. As a woman in color, she experienced many injustice and painful time. Thanks to her hard working and persistence, she got the tenure finally.
Reading this article, I realized how hard for an international female professor succeed in their careers. No matter in teaching or research, they met more problems than male professors. It doesn’t mean they are not as good as male professors. In fact, female professors are good enough to be praised and respected. They play important roles in research and teaching. However, what they got is far away less than what they gave. I think it is time to stop the discrimination in academic field.
My question is “Will the gender of the employers make an effect on the discrimination in the academic field?”
