Xin Nie, A04, Week 9

After reading “Academic Symbiosis – A manifesto on tenure and promotion in Asian American studies” by Wei Ming Dariotis discusses the need for academic symbiosis. It's discusses the necessity of academic symbiosis. Academic symbiosis encourages the establishment of a community in which people share and support each other. I think cooperation is everywhere in our lives. This is an era of a knowledge economy. The competition in all walks of life is becoming more and more fierce. Individual effort is not enough to gain an advantage in these competitions, so the spirit of cooperation plays an increasingly important role in competitions. The ability of an individual is limited. The completion of many tasks requires teamwork. For example, students who are good at math can teach their friends math, and students who are adept in writing papers can help classmates review their papers. The same applies to professors. They can work together to advance their research and improve their teaching quality. Cooperation can mobilize all the resources and talents of team members, and will automatically banish all the disharmony and injustice. At the same time, cooperation will give those sincere and selfless team members some appropriate rewards. If cooperation is voluntary, it will generate a strong and long-lasting force. Besides, with the support of a community, individuals can better bring their abilities and talents into play. Therefore, those in the academic circle should not merely regard each other as opponents; they should regard their fellow researchers as resources and recognize their invaluable knowledge. Only in this way can the individual accomplish his goals and realize his value better.
