In this week’s reading, “Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian

American Studies”, which is written by Wei Ming Dariotis impressed me the most. In this reading, the author first begins with some examples and Star Wars: Rogue one to let us understand the importance and impact of friendship. Just like the author says: “This friendship deserves attention because it reflects the promise of higher education: valuing symbiotic relationships that endure great change and conflict.” I really like the way the author uses these stories which can let the audience understand the article easier and make the article more interesting. In addition, I also learned another word from this article, which is “Academic Symbiosis”. The word means that “the antithesis of academic competition, hierarchy, and parasitism.” The way the author introduces this word is very excellent that the author first describes her own experience of failure in tenure and promotion. Then she introduces this word because she considers academic symbiosis as a way of helping people out of the situation of academic failure.

Although academic symbiosis cannot dissolve failure in academics, it can, as the author states, “Academic symbiosis means, most of all, letting go of our own fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, and fear of shame.” I agree with this idea and I think that gives us enough reason for us to consider academic symbiosis as a useful and good solution. Because without fear and think about giving up, we can keep going on our road and fight for our dream.
