Week 9 Blog
For this week's reading, the piece that I was interested in was "Pain + Love = Growth: The Labor of Pinayist Pedagogical Praxis" by Melissa-An Nievera Lozano. This reading was very intriguing because I was able to get a better understanding to why Filipinx culture strive together no matter what. In this reading, the author mentions a few scholar activists and how they dealt with race, discrimination, etc. in order to pursue a career in academia. The author also mentions the colonization of the Philippines by the Spaniards and how it also became US territory later on. It's sad and disheartening to know that the United States wanted to strip away Filipinx' identity and claim them as others. They weren't considered Americans, but they also weren't considered to be Pinoy's anymore. Many of the stories that the scholars shared in this reading was how they dealt with the harsh environment trying to pursue their careers in academia. Despite going through the hardships, many of the scholars stayed true to themselves and held on to what they believe in such as their integrity and identity. Even though the Philippines and many Pinoys/pinays went through difficult times, the "love" they have for their country and culture, helped them grow and move forward from their past.
