One of the biggest tragedies in our society is that racial discrimination still largely exists in higher education, in academia and in the work environment. In the article “Pain + Love = Growth: The Labor of Pinayist Pedagogical Praxis,” Melissa-Ann Nievera-Lozano described the injustice that she and her family went through as women of color. Her struggles she had in higher education proved that women of color are always subject to discrimination and have more obstacles to overcome in academia. Converting the years of silence to strength must have been a hard decision, but being a warrior was not a choice, but an inevitable decision to come together and fight back.

Fighting back doesn’t mean hating each other. In the article “Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American Studies,” Professor Dariotis emphasized the importance of developing mutual friendship and understanding in faculty. I loved the metaphor of the friendship between Aliens in the movie “Star Wars,” so I hope the concept of “symbiotic relationship” could be established in academia. As much as friendship between friends matters in academia, the bond in faculty is important. The strong bond, coming from symbiotic relationships, will help us to embrace both conflict and change.
