Week 9

In this week's reading named ": Academic Symbiosis: A manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American Studies" by Wei Ming Dariotis, it mainly talks about the situation of Asian American women scholars in the academia should be changed, there should be a "academia symbiosis" in the academic world. At the beginning of the article, the author indicated that there was a force of friendship in academia. She used a famous movie called “Star War: Rogue One" to claim that the friendship in the movie represents the promise of higher education: valving symbiotic relationships that endure great change and conflict. It also represents the kind of small actions that can lead to great change. Instead of putting oppressive power on them, academia should create a system that supports the work Asian American women scholars did.
It's very hard for Asian American women scholars to get promotions. As the author said in the article: "Tenure and promotion are posited as the reward for decades for individualized academic preparation and labor, with academic freedom attached to the idea of tenure symbolizing the height of intellectual capital." Academia should not ignore the effect of Asian American women scholars in academic institutions. They should get respected and the position that they deserved for. In this way, it's really important to process the academia symbiosis though it is far away from the current situation. However, there should be no more hierarchy system in academia based on a logic of scarcity: in order for one to win, another must lose. It should be more like a conversation with sharing and supporting each other.
Question: How can we boost the process of academia symbiosis in the higher education institution?
