For this weeks blog post, I decided to read "Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American Studies," by Wei Ming Dariotis. This reading documents tenure struggles similar to many of the other professors in this fight the tower book. The overarching theme is the same for all of the accounts from different professors of asian American descent of those with ties to the academic field of asian American studies. In this specific instance however, Dariotis pleas that what might change the status quo in this scenario would be to change the structure of hierarchy from within and incorporate the help of students. Dariotis constantly emphasizes how the incorporation of scholars would aid in solving this problem. While many people agree that there needs to be change however, one obstacle that is faced is the fact that not everyone wants to redesign the entire hierarchical structure of academia. This leads to the ultimate goal being incorporation of academic symbiosis, which incorporates help from students and scholars as opposed to teachers and faculty alone. What I dont understand, is why academia would have a problem with this. What I did like about this however, was the incorporation of references in order to make the reading more understandable.
My question is, are any universities currently practicing academic symbiosis?
