Week 6

In the reading materials this week, I read the article “Opening the Box: An International Asian Woman Scholar’s Fight” by Akiko Takeyama. After I read the article, I know how Asian American women are treated unequally. It talks about that Asian women faculty was treated unfairly in academia and the working area.

In fact, I think it is harder for Asian Americans to access higher education than Americans. The first challenge for them is the language barrier. For most of the Asian Americans, English is not their first language and they need to spend a lot of time to master the language they will use in academia and working area. The thing about language is not done yet. Although they can speak English fluently, it is hard for everyone to get rid of their accent. What I know is that many Asian Americans were discriminated against because of their accent and many companies refuse to hire Asian Americans because of their race and English speaking, although their ability is higher than the Whites. It is even harder for Asian American women. We cannot deny the fact that there are more job positions open for men than for women. For example, my cousin used to tell me that she was declined from her job because of pregnancy.

I think it is urged for us to control the discrimination toward Asian American females. They are the minority in society, and they need help.

Question: If Asian Americans think they are discriminated against, how can they seek help?
