Week 6 Blog Huiling Chen ASA002 A01
Even though I already read the book for 6
weeks, every time I read it, it still really impresses me. This week when I read
the miseducating Hmong students, it reminds me of social engineering. As
mentioned, the US education wants to teach the Hmong students that their culture
has problems, and the culture needs to be fixed. And as pointed out that, the
reality of doing so just because they are not able to teach students of color.
I used to consider that social engineering is because they think they have
strong power and consider if they can enslave people in their mind, they can be
stronger. But it just funny to see that people also use social engineering when
they lack the capacity for doing something. This is something new to me. But no
matter they are powerful or not, their purpose for this social engineering is
inappropriate since the control is based on their own interest and takes the Hmong
students' opportunity to learn their own culture away. And they purposely inject
a wrong idea about their own culture. I consider this action is really evil.
Question:
We know that every culture is valuable. But
there are so many things (classes) that need to learn and teach. So, in the
education system, how can we incorporate all of them?
