Yuan Zuo A04 Week9

In week 9, I read the article "Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American Studies" written by Wei Ming Dariotis.  He came up "Academic Symbiosis" this idea through his experience on tenure and promotion in academia. He did a good job on his work and waited for a promotion chance, but he did not get anything despite everyone in his department saw his hard work. Wei defined academic symbiosis as "the antithesis of academic competition, hierarchy, and parasitism."  He pointed out that: " Asian American studies departments in general, and faculty conducting research in Asian American studies, are seriously under resourced." It is true that Asian American studies are not emphasized programs. When our group is doing the podcast assignment, I saw lots of scholars of Asian American studies wrote the difficulty of conducting Asian American studies and the lack of resources.  It seems like no body is caring about Asian Americans, even they themselves do not. I particularly like one sentence from Wei:"we need to free ourselves from the shackles of oppressive knowledge regimes." Do not doubt yourself or do not feel shame to be an Asian or Asian American. He taught me I should trust my own knowledge, values and judgments. Especially for those people working on ethical studies, they should trust themselves or the supportive power of academic symbiosis. As Wei said, practitioners of Asian American studies should "shape and communicate wisdom despite the oppression of academic and other institutions. "Academic Symbiosis should be an objective for everyone. It connects people across boundaries, as Wei suggested in conclusion part. My question is as discrimination or any other ethical problem is still a big issue in society, why is the lack of ethical studies still so big nowadays?
