Tanvi Chopra ASA2 A01 Week 9

ASA2 A01
Week 9

This week's readings were Melissa-Ann Nievera-Lozano's "Pain + Love = Growth: The Labor of Pinayist Pedagogical Praxis" and Wei Ming Dariotis' "Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American Studies". Pain + Love = Growth is about six Pinay scholar activists and also details into Pinay culture. It describes the story of these immigrant families, these women of color who are always subject to discrimination and have more hoops to jump through in academia because of the color of their skin. It entails into the need, the necessity for such women to come together and fight back.

I agreed with many powerful statements the author made. This story is a reminder of the injustice that women of color have faced in higher education and the importance of these women uniting together to fight this injustice, to convert the years of silence into strength. We all want to believe that our thinking has progressed, this is the 21st century and we are open-minded and free to make our own choices. However, that is not the truth. The truth of the matter is that racial discrimination still largely exists in higher education, in academia and in the work environment. Question: How many decades of progressive thinking will it take to truly end racial discrimination?
