This course began during an extremely difficult time in the world. I was planning on taking this class before because the topic of this course is about modern Asian American which I am interested in since I have some Asian American and I came from an Asian background. I hope to learn more about the reasons behind concurrent xenophobia and micro violence and what can be done to protect people’s rights. I believe that the awareness of racism against Asian Americans should be brought up and be taken more seriously just like other ethnicities in the US.
Ever since the outbreak of COVID-19 happened in the US, my parents have constantly suggested I go back to China since the situation is controlled. I didn’t choose to do so because firstly, the tickets were extremely costly due to the high demand. Secondly, there are occasional reports of people who would lie about their recent contacts and try to slip through the test and get on the flights to China to receive free treatment. I don’t want to risk myself getting infected. However, my parents got very anxious about the frequent racist act. Below is from one of the news that spread all over on WeChat.
An Asian American family, including a 2-year-old toddler, was stabbed by a man who thought they were “infecting people with Coronavirus”(RESONATE, 2020).
Even before the actual outbreak, when there were only less than 100 cases of Coronavirus reported in the western world, Chinese international students already experienced bully and refuse entry in certain areas. In comparison, when the H1N1 virus broke out in the US in 2009 and spread to the whole world infecting millions of people, no one called it an “America Virus”. As quoted from Yikun Zhou, an international student and activist, “when the H1N1 infected 120,000 Chinese citizens and killed almost a thousand, no one painted a “Virus-Spangled Banner”. But when there’s not yet a single case of coronavirus reported in Denmark, some Denish Artist painted a “Virus Red Flag”(Yikun, Z, personal conversation, 2020).
Under the guise of freedom speech, people are taken this world crisis as a chance to their practice of “freedom of bias”.
My question to the topic is, why has racism against Asians been ignored, unpunished, and unacknowledged in the US and the world?
