As we continued learning about the modern history of Asian Americans, I begin to realize the hidden oppression and broken system against Asians (American) under the guise of top rankings universities around the world. In the lecture this week, we talked about the hierarchy among Asian Americans/immigrants, and looked at the “privileged oppression” effect caused by the name “model minority”. Even though Asian Americans are known to have the highest income, but “income is not the same as wealth… the wealth gap among Asian Americans is wider than it is among white Americans”(Chang, T. 2018). The Asians who are struggling are ofter obscured. The myth of model minority actually causes an inverse effect that people who are struggling and suffering to live up to the expectations.
“Almost two-thirds of the sample (61.5 percent) stated that they had experienced or developed specifically long-term physical or psychological health issues after starting graduate school”(Valverde, C, and Wei, M, 2020) Take this as an example, the unhealthy competition and chain of discrimination have cause crisis in the population in academia. The destructive competition is a result of racism, sexism, ageism and other short-sighted judgments as a person commented under Chang’s question of Asian Privilege.
