Mattia Sayson ASA 002 A02 Week 4

In this week's reading, I was particularly surprised in the chapter, "Killing Machine
Exposing the Health Threats to Asian American Women Scholars in Academia," because of the numerous stories of female scholars who suffered through health problems caused by the discriminating environment they work in. This should not continue to be a problem! Why should a person be surrounded by people consumed with hate as they simply are trying to work? The results from the study of how many women of color face health issues and begin to struggle with disorders like depression or anxiety is truly unimaginable. The fact that it gets to the point should only raise more discussions on how to prevent that for people. This idea that "From colleagues and students alike, there is an expectation for Asian American women to behave in stereotypical ways—in other
words, being demure, not assertive," is so outdated and false that it should not drive others to hold these standards for a specific group of people. Reading about how so many women who are not solely professors, but also wives and mothers, internalize these ideas and stereotypes and uses this as reason to push themselves even harder is not fair; in the end, they don't reap what they sow. The system does not allow them to.This statement, "Being silenced is a form of being disrespected. It communicates that one’s ideas are not valued. Academic work is the work of ideas; therefore, to be an academic whose ideas are silenced is to be a worker who is not valued." is so powerful because it really breaks down what is happening to so many people all over the country. The ability is to speak is one of the most powerful things humans have. For so many years, the voices of those oppressed were silenced. However, books like these are what give these women the chance to fight for what they deserve. I wonder if other industries face these same problems? To what extent?
