Not only in academic career but also in entertainment
industry, women of color always get inadequate payment and strict requirements.
Actress Lucy Liu demonstrated her payment was much less than other white female
actors in the movie of Kill Bill. Moreover, her performance later on in the TV
show Elementary was criticized by another British white male actor Martin
Freeman in a public interview. Lucy Liu was playing John Watson in a female
edition, which was different from the John Watson that Martin played in
Sherlock. His comment was not about the story structure of that TV show nor
even on actors’ performance. He was mean and described himself as the ‘prettier
Watson’ and Lucy Liu as ugly. I’m not sure if this was his British humor, but
I’m sure people who hear this comment would not think his words were funny.
West world used to be famous about their chivalry, heroism, and romance, but
now it looks like all those classic qualities are dead.
After finishing the weekly reading, I felt strongly disappointed by the discrimination against Asian women from the whole society. Knowing all these bad things happening to so many women of color, I felt very insecure and afraid of being the next victim of the terrible sexism and racism. All these people who are no matter anti-Asians nor discrimination against on Asian, we Asian women will always be targeted. Staying silent, witnessing others to get attacked, and doing nothing would only weaken the strength and belief in ourselves. We need to stand up for those women of color, not just because we are doing for the right thing, but also because we are them. Everything and every effort we put in is for our own good.
We fight not only for today, we fight for the whole life time.
