In this week’s readings, I thought a lot after reading “The Cost of Speaking.” I really like this reading not only because of the content, but also the writing techniques that the author uses. To be specific, the author compares the results of speaking and not speaking, which highlights the cost of speaking. The author also ends the paragraph of speaking and starts the paragraph of not speaking with the similar sentence, “you die young, depending on…” As for content, it shows that people need many courage to speak out because there are many problems to overcome. For example, they need to give up their daily normal life to spend much time in protesting and voicing, and they even not being understood by people around them.
Based on the reading, I understood the reason why many people still don’t fight for their rights even though they know how unfair their life is. Although it is necessary to protest for more fair society, people always choose to compromise because the problems of speaking out are inevitable and have huge impacts. Before reading this article, I never realize how brave people who speak out are, and I really admire them. I think we need to be the part of brave people because problems will be solved in the day that the public hear our voices. The more people join in, the louder our voices will be.
My question towards this week is “How people can protect them from the problems of speaking out?”
