In the article “Healing the Wounds and Ruptures of Graduate School,” Cindy Nhi Huynh talks about five stages she experienced when she as a graduate student. That is “Wreckage, Bleeding Out, Cleaning the Wound, Addressing the Wound, and Scar Tissue.” She shared her experience that she was treated inequality in graduate school because she is a woman of color. She was forced to researches she didn’t want and didn’t get enough support on her writing. After I read this article, I learned that not only women faculty of color faced unjust treatment in academia, but also students of color in the university. I think the fountainhead of this situation may due to the system of academia. Because most of the people of color could not get into a high position in academia, less powerful people of color will stand out and protect the group of the colored race. I think we need to call on more women of color students and faculty to awaken and share their experience in academia to get more attention from society and government. Only if people speak up their suffering, the tough current situation can be noticed by more people and get more help from different fields in society.
Question: How is the academic system structured?
