For this week’s blog, I am going to be focusing on the reading “investigating discrimination: injustice against women of color in the academy”. Discrimination in hiring and promotion in the U.S. academy among the scholars of color and Asian American women is severe, so they did a case study to uncover this problem in the University of Southern California. The findings are surprising, and it proves that the problem do exist in our academia. They found that 92% of white male faculty were awarded tenure at USC compared to 55% of female and minority faculty were awarded tenure at USC. They also found that white junior faculty are awarded tenured at a higher rate than minority junior faculty, and Asian American female faculty are awarded tenure at a lower rate than white female faculty.
92% and 55% is a huge difference, and this is definitely unfair towards the female and the minority group. Also, the study shows that being white is superior than being Asian American female. This is why I am fear to work in the United States. Even though I was born in U.S., people still see me as Asian, because i am a Chinese. I know the fact that males have higher job titles than females. But this study also shows me that being Asian American could be a disadvantage for us. It is not because I don’t have the ability to get promoted, but because of my race. This is sad to hear, but this is our reality, and we should end this.
