Qianyang Hu A02 Week 2

After reading the articles assigned this week, I have a better understanding of the “racism,
sexism, xenophobia and other inequities” they have experienced. I agree with the statement
that “Asian Americans” are one of the most common racial or ethnic groups in the United
States. According to the statistical data, the number of Asian American population accounts
for approximately 6% of the total United States population. In fact, this diversified group
consists of more than 20 kinds of cultures. However, Asian Americans are regarded as a
model minority group. When people meet Asian Americans, they assume that this group of
people is all hard-working, well-adapted and successful. In the reading “Taking Action:
Asian American Faculty against Injustices in the Academy”, the above stereotype towards
Asian Americans is considered as “a double-edged sword”. The “model minority” stereotype
generates negative impacts on them to some degree. The misguided stereotypes of
Asian Americans cause the serious phenomenon of discrimination. Asian Americans are
treated in an unfair way especially in the field of academia. Their access to academic support and services are denied. What’s more, they are often overlooked in group projects and academic research. The so-called “model minority” stereotype reminds me of one stereotype that Asian students are better at mathematics and science. Based on the 2016 Nature Index which ranks countries by the number of scientific outputs, China, Japan and South Korea won. People believe that Asian teachers teach students mathematics and sciences in a different way compared to teachers in western countries, Chinese teachers in particular. To be honest, I feel offended when others say that Chinese students must be good at math because they come from China. I hope those misleading stereotypes will be eliminate in the future.

Question: Since the Asian Americans' stereotype is considered as “a double-edged
sword” in the reading, what is its strengths?
