After reading prologue "Taking Action: Asian American Faculty against injustices in the Academy" by Shirley Hune, I learn more about justice struggles Asian American went through. Shirley focused on the experiences of Asian
American academic women since the 1970s and gave me a comprehensive understanding of Asian Americans under historical and political backgrounds. She said: " Through mainstream culture, Asian Americans
are stereotyped as hard workers, high achievers, and economically successful..." I agree with her and feel her point. People think lots of Asian Americans are hardworking but they do not ask why they are hardworking. Those immigrants need to adapt new environment, learn English and make money here in the US. As a result, they need to be more hardworking than native people. This is a fair game. I like Shirley's idea when she said: "Asian Americans strive to achieve
academically and to attend college both to fulfill their parents’aspirations and
sacrifices to make a better life for their families and to pursue the American
Dream for themselves, like other Americans." Those people are the same as other Americans on the way pursuing their dreams on this land. I noticed both professor in this week's lecture and Shirley Hune mentioned the word " Yellow Peril" which refers to general fear, mistrust and hatred of, first Chinese and then other Asian immigrant groups. I really hope those stereotypes will disappear one day.
Question: What should Asian Americans do when they face "less visible insults and inequities(written by Shirley Hune in page 12)" ?
