Qiuyue Li, A04, week 3

From W.P.’s experience, it is not difficult to see that women in color are so hard to pursue in academia. She co-taught a class with another Professor, but at the end of the semester, she was removed from the co-presentation. “Asian American women are particularly significant in understanding how successful power holders have been in suppressing, isolating, and dividing group” (Valverde & Daritotis, 2013). To fight against the inequalities, women in color must collaborate together and have a voice. For example, UC Berkley students organized strikes twice to protect ethic studies department in 1969 and 1999 because they thought ethic studies is very important and necessary.

Ethic studies reflect the histories and contemporary realities of people in color in the U.S. Although the strikes met violence resistance, they were worthwhile because people in color must have own perspectives instead of only European’s opinions. In fact, fighting against inequalities always has sacrifice. For example, Asian American were seen as Yellow Peril, in the movement of removing anti-Asian sentiments, protesters sacrificed so many things, but the sacrifice was worthy. Women in color met blocks in academia, so they need to have some actions, for example improving the tenure-track for women professor in color, which provides a promised and stable environment to do research. There is still a long way for women in color to remove the barriers in academic fields.
