Shirley Hune's Taking Action: Asian American Faculty Against Injustices in the Academydiscusses Asian American's perspectives in the workforce. There are many justices in the workforce for different populations such as unequal pay and bring preferences. One problem that some Asian American faces that they can hardly get promoted due to discriminations or stereotypes. Bolden-Barrett's writes a blog on an HR website which discusses this situation.
Asian American are taking large percentage of the workforce. According to EEOC in 2013, Asian American participation rate is 11.46%. The data is from seven years ago and I believe the percentage has increased a lot since then. The federal organization EEOC made many efforts to address racism and discrimination in employment but there are still invisible norms that exist. Although obvious discriminations become hard to see in employment after law enforcement, some promotion and benefits opportunities are harder to obtain for Asian American employees.
One problem is that Asian American rarely get promoted or are not choice of promotion due to their identity. The article explains that Asian American can be seen as non-underrepresented group which are not targeted to advancement in leadership position. In order to solve such problem, Diversity & Inclusion goal is introduced to encourage workforce to be diverse and provide positions for all people.
Many strategies are implanted in HR along with law enforcement that try to create an equal workforce to all. Many associations are formed to support their members such as Asian American Associations that are common in colleges and labor unions that especially serve Asian American. A lot of efforts are made but racism and discriminations still exist. The recent coronavirus outbreak also brings negative impacts to Asian American populations. There are still many struggles that people need to go through.
