Jiawen Shou, A04, Week 2
During this special time, Asian American faculty may face more challenges in work than usual. Many people put the coronavirus fear to Asian American populations. For example, Asian American faculty may get distanced or turned away during work by other people because of the coronavirus fear. Many business run by Asian population such as restaurants suffer economic crisis because less people choose Asian businesses for the nonsense reason of coronavirus fear. Many people seem to find a excuses for racism during this period of time. My cousin who lives in the states also says that she could feel the distances been kept aways by others when she went to work several weeks before the shelter in place order.
It's a very hard and disappointing to see that some people choose to discriminate others instead of working together for a better solution during this time. In this article by NBC News, the author also points out that marginalized groups are always blamed in disease outbreaks. Racism and xenophobia spreads out that Asian population are blamed to at fault for spreading the disease. Recently, my family back home start to worry about my safety in the states now because Asian are facing so many discriminations. I hope that the knowledge in this class can help me better cope the situation now.
