WEEK 4
“Who killed Soek-Fang Sime” is a short poem by Wang Ping, which talk about the discrimination of Asian American teacher. In the poem, it always mentioned a person, Soek-Fang Sim, a Singapore Chinese teacher in America. She was a top-notch teach and award-winning scholar. However, she did not pass the review and died when she was thirty-five. The author of the poem, Wang Ping is an Asian American teacher. She was the most published author with the most innovative teaching records, but she got the lowest pay in school. She has to pay 2 dollars each month because college deducted 40,000 dollars from her salary. She gave up lots of time with the doctor or dentist, even with her two babies. But, she teaches a full load of class without a day of maternal leave.
Both Soek-Fang and the author had a good performance, they were treated unequally, were told that “not good enough”. Soek-Fang decided to be silent, however, “Silence is no longer an option.”
Our author, W.P., decided to speak out and fight with them. And, she wrote “Who killed Soek-Fang Sim” to encourage Asian Americans to fight for themselves, and to tell them “we are good enough” “Till we reach the land of the free.”
Question: Is there any law that can help Asian Amerian teachers?
