Lingling Huang ASA002 A03 Week 1

Reflection of Coronavirus

An unexpected pandemic called COVID19 has placed the world in a state of panic. This type of virus that was first discovered in Wuhan, China, spreading across the whole country at an overwhelming speed. It was before the spring festival when the majority of people were traveling back to their hometowns when the outbreak of coronavirus in my country. I was shocked to see this sort of situation for the first time but also quite glad to see what effort made by China and the government to control the spreading of COVID19. But surprisingly, when I was searching online to see the condition of COVID19 in countries other than China, a short video of President Trump calling coronavirus "Chinese Virus" or "China virus" got my attention. Even so, he acclaimed that "it is no racist at all, not at all", and he was just trying to make the statement more accurate.

According to CNN, originated from the guidance of the World Health Organization(WHO), the naming of President Trump is "both inaccurate and stigmatizing". But dare I say, naming a virus after a country is truly racism and insulting. Although it did come from China, Chinese people and the government are taking responsibility for preventing the situation from bad to worse. Everyone wears masks when going out, and has controlled this pandemic from distributing to more people in the world in just 3 months, which is a rare and remarkable phenomenon in the world.

Trump again defends use of the term 'China virus'

From today's situation, I can see that the phenomena of racism are still not yet eliminated. I am hoping to learn more about the history and experiences of Asian Americans, learning what we can do to fight for the status of Asians and our own rights in the nowadays society as a Chinese.
