Lele Bian A04 WEEK 3

Before I read the introduction, I didn't see how Asian Americans are discriminated in academia, because I thought I can always see thousands of Asians in the different campus. After I read the introduction part, I realize the "discrimination" towards Asian Americans in Academia is usually referring to the teaching field. Just as the book states: Asian American women were being characterized as those kinds that will always comply to hegemonic mandates of control and oppression of others and ourselves, and they are still being stereotyped this way today. Therefore university administrators expected to Asian Americans to simply show up and shut up; More sadly, even if they do swallow everything and say nothing, they will not get rewarded; and if the question to the unjustice system, they will be punished.

Seven Key Cultural Dimensions of the Model Minority Myth ...
Besides the "silent" tag, Asian Americans are usually being tagged with "Model Minority" because they’re part of a group of naturally high achievers who are more educated and more successful than other racial minorities. Even if this tag seems to be favoring the Asian American group, it does not give any benefits to them. Since people expect all Asians should work hard and all Asians are smarter, the administers will always review Asians based on a higher standard.

I only started on several pages of the book, by now I believe the tag is put on Asian Americans is the major reason leading to the discrimination. Therefore, my question raised based on the reading is that if the tag is being removed, will the discrimination be reduced?  Also, while I was reading, I also came up with another question regarding the immigrants. Since a huge portion of immigrants is Asian Americans, they are afraid that these people would still all the jobs from them. Is it why they decided to make the standard higher in order to secure the job opportunities for their own people?
