Social
engineering and privileged oppression are two words that remaining in my mind
after I read this chapter. Social engineering is a structure that
excludes foreign culture, language and races. At that time, being the largest
group of people, white people felt that they were dominating this land, so they
had more sense of superior than other residents. The minorities, people
suffering from social engineering, were involving privileged oppression in which
the minorities were 'well utilized' by the academia.
I'm wondering if the academia can only be academic. Asian
American scholars were badly tagged and isolated for no solid reason. I was
irritated when I learnt so much injustice, insulting, violence and exclusion
that Asian American female scholars suffered in early 1980s. Studying not only
brings us knowledge but, more important, brings us different perspectives. I
think a scholar failed if he(she) doesn't respect other perspectives. Also, I
hope that there will be a day when the academia can only be academic.
