Jiawen Shou A04 Week 4
I spend a lot of time reading the story of Soek-Fang Sim and try to understand her story. Matt Won wrote an article at The Mac Weekly named, "Former professor Sim 'a true original', dies at 35". Won interviewed many of professor Sim's students and colleagues. All of them provide great feedbacks on how wonderful Sim was as a dedicated professor at the college. Many people expressed shock toward the death of Soek-Fang Sim. From the arctic, it's easy to see that Soek-Fang Sim was a great professor, faculty, friend, and family member. Seek-Fang Sim passed away from breast cancer at the age of 35. Wang Ping, a colleague of Soek-Fang Sim stood up and sued Macalester College for employment discrimination. Ping argues that no matter how much academic achievements Sim made and how much efforts she devoted to the college, Sim never got a promotion because the college denies all her promotion and left the chances to other white male faculty. Ping said that Sim was repeatedly denied promotion although she had done all the necessary things to get one. In the poem Ping wrote, she points out that the fact the women are always discriminated against for their physiological identities such.
Seok-Fang Sim is an Asian American women. She was discriminated against by her ethnicity, her gender, even her illness - breast cancer. Breast cancers are common in women and rare in men which makes the disease not seen and not emphasized by many people. Although Seek-Fang contributed so much to the college and had done so many achievements, the college totally ignored her value just because of the fact that she is an Asian American women. It's heart-breaking to see such inequality exist in a college because college, as higher education, is supposed to educate young generations for future. It is great that Wang Ping stood up, but it is necessary that more women can stand up and fight against the discriminations around them. This is a very inspiring story to know about and learn from it
