In the reading, " Taking Action: Asian American Faculty against the Injustices in the Academy" by Shirley Hune, explain how the academy within universities tries to make themselves diverse but does not deal with issues like racism. She discusses how Asian American women in the academic environment in the universities are struggling due to racism, discrimination, tenure, and promotion denials. Due to the stereotypes against Asian Americans, society has an idea "all" Asian Americans are the model minority, hiding the fact Asian Americans are struggling to enter and navigate their way in academics. Since American society assume that Asian American does not need help, denying the rights and services for disadvantage Asian Americans. The education system denied Asian America since the segregation of schools for children of color to the topic at hand, the fight for educational rights, and tenure for Asian American women scholars. Shirley Hune explains how there were Asain American educators who were fighting for disadvantage Asian American students living in low-income families who did not have any academic and finical help. Before, there weren't resources or services that Asian American students can find at my community college. She reminded me of the Asian American educators at my community college who fought and created a learning community for Asian American students to provide resources and services that the students need to achieve their academic goals. The community college provided examples and evidence of Asian Americans students who enter college are drooping out without receiving a bachelors like how Shirly provided that "Nearly 20 percent of the Asian American and Pacific Islander first-time freshman students in the California State University system drop out before their third year of college"( CSU advice of the Chancellor, 2016)( Shirly 6). There was similar evidence shown to my community college since the college did not want to provide finically support and resources to these students, believing that they did need the community college support. Asain American in all fields have been fighting for education and to enter the professoriate. Asian Americans reaching professoriate are paving a path and fighting injustices that face in academics.
How are Asian American educators are fighting for disadvantage Asian American and Pacific Islander since the stereotype of "model minority" is still embedded within socity since I felt that advocacy since community college?
