According to the reading named “’ The Time to Fight Is Now’”: Asian American Women, Academia’s Socially Engineered ‘Privileged Oppressed,’ Go Rogue” written by Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis. This section describes the racial and sexual discrimination that Asian American Women face in the Academy. Even though lots of Asian American women are under injustice and stress in the Academy, they choose to be silent and afraid to fight against the injustice in the Academy. People who stand up and accuse of the academic discrimination started a movement named “Fight the Tower.” This movement encourages more Asian Americans who face injustice in the Academy to speak up, and it serves as an anthology. This anthology is a resource for future researchers and administrators to address and redress the injustices experienced by women of color in the Academy.
During the reading, I especially notice a thing named “new Yellow Peril.” According to Valverde and Dariotis, “the early 1980s emergence of the ‘Asian whiz kid’ trope must also be seen as part of the ‘new Yellow Peril’ in relationship to the perceived threat of the resurging Japanese economy and the post- Cold War Chinese economic juggernaut.” This reminds me of the “Yellow Peril” we discussed in class. Yellow Peril is derived from racists who are afraid of Asian Americans taking their jobs in the nineteenth century. They claimed that all white people should against Asian people and deported them from the United States. Asian Americans were under the throat, and their properties were taken. Some of them were even hurt and killed. Also, although this racial discrimination was eventually eliminated, the “new Yellow Peril” appears due to the booming economy of Asian countries. In my opinion, white people are always afraid that Asian people are more successful than them. The injustice that Asian Americans faced in Academy and the unreasonable hostility towards Asian Americans are outstanding examples to prove the white privilege. White citizens are a part of the United States’ population, so do Asian Americans. They all live and work for the same country. White people should stop this meaningless discrimination and work together with Asian Americans to build a better country.
Nevertheless, my question for this week’s reading is that do Asian Americans have their institution like Labor Union to protect them from the injustice in Academy?
