Yiqun Geng ASA002 A01 Week 3

By reading the introduction of “Fight the Tower,” I knew some contents of the book the author will cover in this book and the purpose why author writes this book. She emphasized the necessity for Asian American women to fight together to ask for the justice, because the discrimination, racism and unfairness still exist in the academic field. Specifically, “social engineering,” which tags people “superior” or “inferior” based on the race and gender is common in the academia. People is totally different from the products. It is time to fight against the oppressions of academia. Asian American women should not be ignored anymore. They should have a chance to be hired, to be promoted, and to get what they deserve.

After reading the introduction, I felt so depressed about the situation Asian American women faced. I think it is ridiculous to make decisions based on the race and gender instead of the ability. In one of my classes, I got the knowledge it is hard for women of color to get a high position in the workplace although they are as good as men. Women are promoted at a lower rate than men. They need to make more and more efforts to be approved. In my opinion, we should oppose this traditional phenomenon for the sake of fairness in the academic field.

My question is that “Why do some people who know the benefits of diversity refuse to accept it in schools?"

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Copley Square in Boston on Sunday to protest Harvard’s admissions practices. A trial begins on Monday that will examine whether the university discriminates against Asian-American applicants.
