Aoran Zhao ASA 002 A02 Week 2 Blog

I read the Prologue of "Fight the Tower" this week. The prologue was titled "Taking Action: Asian American Faculty against injustices in the Academy" which talked about how Asian American fight for their rights. People always have different stereotypes for white people and Asian Americans. I learned that there of only 6% Americans are Asian Americans. So Asian American is a minority stereotype. The "Yellow Peril" also exists. Asian American are treated as permanent foreigners and second-class citizens. I also learned that the power in America is based on color. The education of Asian American went into a dilemma because they are neither Black nor White. Asian American's kids do not know which kind of school to attend.

Asian Americans are being ignored by this world. According to “Countering stereotypes about Asian Americans”, Zara Greenbaum wrote that “Our existence as an aggregate group is very much a political creation that exists only in the United States,” says Helen Hsu, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and president of the Asian American Psychological Association.

“But when we look at specific subpopulations, we see that for almost every health and economic indicator, there are Asian Americans who are struggling.” Asian American are suffering from being invisible.

Greenbaum also indicated that “Being invisible is damaging in itself because the way in which you’re suffering goes unseen, largely ignored and overlooked,” says Tseng. And while many groups experience discrimination, the invisibility Asian Americans face is “pernicious on its own and can ultimately cause even more suffering.”

We can see that being invisible means that nobody cares what you are suffering, which is the most terrible thing. Nobody will speak for them. The situation cannot be changed in a short time. But, I hope there are people who stand out to support them and fight for their rights.

Question:
Why stereotypes are so easy to form? Why people do not see a person as a individual?
