Stacy Liu, A01, Week 2

Stacy Liu
A01
Week 2

In the reading “Fight the Tower: Women of Color in Academia Manifesto ix Prologue: Taking Action: Asian American Faculty against Injustices in the Academy”, I learn a lot of information about the situation of Asian Americans that they encounter racism, xenophobia, and stereotype impression. I am surprised about this phenomenon because I used to think these are the thing only international students, especially Chinese students, have these experiences when they stay in the U.S. There is a most common thing happened on me and also it is the most common thing that I heard from people around me, which is the stereotype impression of Asian American -- hard workers, high achievers, and economically successful that mention by Valverde (2019) in this week’s reading assignment.
In places like group work and discussion of math, statistic, or science class, people around me always consider I am born to be good at these subjects and I should get a very good grade and lead the group of these classes. The same thing also happened to my friends. I acknowledge that this view is not totally bad in some aspects, but it indeed makes people feel uncomfortable. Asians might be ignored in these classes because the majority of people consider them as good grade students in these subjects.
The question that I want to ask is that does the majority of Asian Americans feel racism and xenophobia? I consider the stereotype impression is reasonable to happen on Asian Americans. However, most Asian American friends around me told me that they never encounter racism and xenophobia. Maybe my information is not accurate due to I did not have too many Asian American friends.
