Sitian Zhang ASA002 A01 Week 3

In the book, The Time to Fight Is Now”: Asian American Women, Academia’s Socially Engineered “Privileged Oppressed, the author demonstrates a severe problem for Asian American Women in the education field. Many believe that Asians can do well on any academic subjects from K-12 even in university. I have to admit that this kind of stereotyping exists and many people still believe it till now.

In my high school in Maryland, many of my classmates who are Americans blindly believe that I could do well in any subject and think that math or science should be a piece of cake for me. However, the truth turns out that I'm not that smart to handle math or science. Others' saying even influence myself that I thought maybe I'm good at this. The falsely confidence made me not work hard on these subjects and eventually I failed to succeed in these classes.

The stereotyping of Asian American women involves various aspects of life and most Asian American women will face this kind of situation. I think it's necessary to break the rumor and increase the power of truth by speaking out in a peaceful way. No changes come easily, we do need to put a lot of effort to work for it. To eliminate inequality involving gender and race, this would be a long way to go.

Questions: what causes this stereotyping and who starts it?
