In the article “Investigating Discrimination: Injustice against Women of Color in the Academy,” the author showed women of color in the academy experience a lot of discrimination in hiring and promotion. The author showed a lot of data to support her argument. She said that “While the data are clear the near-universal rate of USC awarding tenure to white male junior faculty (91.2 percent)...The success rate for Asian American female faculty at 40 percent being awarded tenure by USC.” The data surprises me a lot. I see the big gap between white junior faculty and minority junior faculty. Ignored the ability of Asian American women scholars, they always in the lowest hierarchy in academia. Asian American women scholars not only face lower hiring and promotion rate, but also face a lot of health issues. In the article “Killing Machine: Exposing the Health Threats to Asian American Women Scholars in Academia,” the author discussed the current health situation of Asian American women scholars. Under the pressure in academia, such as hostile, model minority myth, and competition, Asian American women scholars afraid to take off when they get sick or after pregnancy. Then they would not get enough rest to recover and store up trouble for the future. I think the situation of Asian American women scholars is hard and severe. All women scholars are fighting for their rights and jobs but also cost a lot---their health.
Question: Do universities have some insurances to protect the health of Asian American Women Scholars in Academia?
