Nuoxin Xu, Week 3, A01

According to this week’s reading, there is an Asian who were looked down when she was applying to the status of professor in her university. Every time when I read about discrimination about Asians, it reminds me about the United Airlines event.
In a speech, 18-year-old Asian girl Canwen Xu said, “ We are playing a strange role in the melting pot -- the United States, and we are always in a ‘gray zone’.”
At the beginning of the speech, Canwen made a joke about the stereotype of Asian Americans.
Canwen came to the United States at the age of two and followed his family in several states: North Dakota, South Dakota, and Idaho. In these places, Chinese tradition is difficult to reconcile with the mainstream of United States.
As the only Asian face in the class, Canwen had only two choices: to conform to the stereotypes or to become “white” like others.
Asian Americans are still experiencing discrimination nowadays, it is hard to change the stereotype of others. It still need a long time.
